Hope you had a great week! This time I want to talk about cleaning your helmet. I personally think that is a part of our tack that is sometimes forgotten, but it should be cleaned constantly because has direct contact with our foreheads and can cause skin problems and is something that particularly looks bad when it’s dirty.
I’m a Charles Owen fan and I have a Charles Owen GR8. If you own a Charles Owen you might know that they sell a special cleaner for helmets and a deodoriser. The deodoriser I think it’s a bit much. But helmets are expensive and clean them with specially formulated products to take care of them is’s important.
As you can see my helmet really needs cleaning in the inside and the outside.
We are going to need:
– Helmet to clean (duhhh)
– Charles Owen Cleaner
– Antibacterial wet wipes
The GR8 is covered, as many Charles Owen, with a felt-like fabric that attracts dust like crazy. For this part gently rub with the wipe, this will remove the dust but not affect the glue that bonds the helmet and the fabric. Don’t’t forget the straps and the visor. You can use the cleaner, but I don’t think is necessary.
For the inside I followed the instructions: spay at a distance of 10 cm, wait 2 min and clean with a wipe. Because the helmet was really dirty I repeated the process twice. I concentrated in the forehead area and at the end rubbed it with a wipe to really disinfect.
It really depends on how much you use the helmet to know the number of times you need to clean it. I usually like to clean it once a week, twice at the max. This keeps it clean without damaging it.
This is the way that I do it. But another really good one is the old brush and hand soap (preferably antibacterial). The outside is the same with the wipe. For the inside you only have to be careful not to add too much water and to dry the excess with a dry towel to keep the helmet from damaging and not to remove the glue.
How do you keep your helmet clean?
