Tomorrow is the International Helmet Awareness Day promoted by Riders4Helmets and I want to talk about it. For me the decision is already taken. I ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. That’s the end of it. I value my head and sadly I didn’t came with a spare so I can’t break it.
I just read an article on The Chronicle of the Horse that they interviewed some of the Dressage riders that took part in Rio. The answers or some of them is the the hat look ”more classic”, but they use helmets when training at home. I really don’t understand them, shows are places with a lot going on and you are more susceptible to accidents.
The helmet helps prevent in 50% head injuries during a fall, and once you had an injury they can be cumulative. You must be protected. In the infographics above and bellow you can find some info on the matter. Also in 1, 2, 3, and many other places.
When buying a helmet always make sure that it’s approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). There is a tag in the inside of the helmet that you can find the information. If it is not certified, it’s just for decoration and does not give protection during a fall.
Are you a pro helmet person?
